The History of Indian Coffee
India’s coffee story is rich, fascinating, and deeply rooted in tradition, culture, and global trade. The journey of coffee in India dates back to the 17th century, when the legendary saint Baba Budan is believed to have smuggled seven coffee beans from Yemen and planted them in the hills of Chikmagalur in Karnataka. This historic act laid the foundation for what would later become one of the world’s most respected coffee-producing regions.
Over the centuries, coffee cultivation expanded across the Western Ghats, covering regions such as Coorg, Chikmagalur, Wayanad, and the Nilgiris. The unique combination of high altitude, fertile soil, abundant rainfall, and shade-grown practices created ideal conditions for producing high-quality Arabica and Robusta coffee. Unlike many other coffee-growing countries, Indian coffee is traditionally grown under a natural canopy of trees, alongside spices like cardamom, pepper, and vanilla, which contributes to its distinctive aroma and smooth flavor profile.
During the British colonial period, organized coffee plantations were established, and India gradually emerged as a key exporter to European markets. Over time, scientific cultivation methods, research institutions, and structured trade systems helped improve quality, yield, and consistency. This transformation positioned India as a reliable source of premium coffee for international buyers.
In the modern era, Indian coffee has gained recognition not only for its taste but also for its sustainable and ethical farming practices. Smallholder farmers, cooperative models, and certification programs have strengthened traceability and quality assurance. Today, Indian coffee is widely used by global roasters and specialty brands, valued for its balanced body, low acidity, and compatibility in espresso blends.
